On compressional wave attenuation in muddy marine sediments

چکیده
A method for measuring in situ compressional wave attenuation exploiting the spectral decay of reflection coefficient Bragg resonances is applied to fine-grained sediments New England Mud Patch. Measurements layer-averaged a 10.3 m mud layer yield 0.04 {0.03, 0.055} dB/m/kHz (braces indicate outer bounds); twice as large at site with 3.2 thickness. It shown that both results are heavily influenced by ∼1 sand-mud transition interval created geological and biological processes mix sand (at base mud) into mud. Informed observations, it appears spatial dependence across Patch can be predicted accounting via simple scaling. Further, ubiquity form suggests scaling may any muddy continental shelf. In principle, predictions littoral environments could substantively improved modest amount geologic biologic information.

Shear wave speed dispersion and attenuation in granular marine sediments.
The reported compressional wave speed dispersion and attenuation could be explained by a modified gap stiffness model incorporated into the Biot model (the BIMGS model). In contrast, shear wave speed dispersion and attenuation have not been investigated in detail. No measurements of shear wave speed dispersion have been reported, and only Brunson's data provide the frequency characteristics of ...
متن کاملThe Measurement of the in situ compressional wave properties of marine sediments
Geoacoustic inversion requires a generic knowledge of the frequency-dependence of compressional wave properties in marine sediments, the nature of which is still under debate. The use of in situ probes to measure sediment acoustic properties introduces a number of experimental difficulties that must be overcome. To this end, a series of wellconstrained in situ acoustic transmission experiments ...
متن کاملTheory of compressional and shear waves in fluidlike marine sediments
An unconsolidated, saturated marine sediment consists of a more or less loose assemblage of mineral grains in contact, with seawater in the interstices. It is postulated that the two-phase medium possesses no skeletal frame, implying that the elastic rigidity modulus of the material is zero. A theory of wave propagation in such a sediment is developed, in which the medium is treated as a fluid ...
متن کاملCompressional and shear wave properties of marine sediments: comparisons between theory and data.
According to a recently developed theory of wave propagation in marine sediments, the dispersion relationships for the phase speed and attenuation of the compressional and the shear wave depend on only three macroscopic physical variables: porosity, grain size, and depth in the sediment. The dispersion relations also involve three (real) parameters, assigned fixed values, representing microscop...
متن کاملGrain-size dependence of shear wave speed dispersion and attenuation in granular marine sediments.
The author has shown that measured shear wave speed dispersion and attenuation in water-saturated silica sand can be predicted by using a gap stiffness model incorporated into the Biot model (the BIMGS model) [Kimura, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 134, 144-155 (2013)]. In this study, the grain-size dependence of shear wave speed dispersion and attenuation in four kinds of water-saturated silica sands wit...
